Stewart 51 Rudder Spar

May 15, 2011 by Mike 3 Comments

Now that the rudder has been disassembled, tonight I’m going start the initial work on the rudder spar.  This will include layout for where the brackets, hinges and ribs are located.  This is important because it’s so easy to get confused and mis-drill a few holes, or totally miss something else that you should have drilled but didn’t.

Here are a couple pictures of the spar web with the spar caps removed.

This next picture is of the mid section of the spar web.  You can see the hole used for the rudder trim cable.

In the next picture I have added black electrical tape to the areas where I don’t want to drill.   These holes are to be saved for additional work later.  In particular this is where the lower hinge brackets are mounted and where the push/pull rod attaches.

In this last picture you can see that I have done a bunch of drilling.  This included match drilling the spar caps to the spar web for the final rivet size of -4.
